For many people, a pump kit sounds as if it would be a very easy thing for them to choose, especially when buying one for a water garden, fish pond, or swimming pool. Those who have the job of choosing and purchasing an industrial-type pump such as a lagoon pump know that there is a lot more to choosing the proper kind of pump to do a job than selecting the most economical pump.   Have you ever really felt how heavy water is? Fill a 5 gallon bucket with water, and attempt to walk back and forth across your yard with it. How many times were you able to do this? Probably, not very many, as water is quite heavy. As you saw if you did this little experiment, it takes muscle and work o move water. This should be kept in mind when you are tempted to choose the least expensive water pump kits you can locate.   That old adage “You get what you pay for” is very true when it comes to buying pump kits. If you choose a cheap model because you think you are saving money, you are fooling yourself.  It may look like a classic pump, and perform like a classic pump... at first, anyway. Before you know it, that pump will more than likely start to give you great trouble, if it doesn't quit entirely.   Those who ork in areas that require the use of
the larger pumps, such as a portable river pump, usually have a budget to go by when purchasing a high ticket item such as a river pump. Even so, they realize that this pump is going to have to move a lot of water while it is in use, and they look for the types of pumps that have been known to give years of trouble free service, and are low maintenance as well.   Make ure you are getting the right size of pump to suit your needs. A pump that is too small will end up suffering from overwork, and will probably break down requently. On the other hand, some owners of pools and water gardens are of the opinion that “bigger is better.” They will select a pump that is much too big and powerful for the job it needs to do, and they might even realize it when they get that first electric bill after the pump is installed. These people did not take the time to understand how pumps work. They figure that a 4000 gallon per hour pump meant for an above ground swimming pool is just right for their 750 gallon koi pond, then wonder why they can never get fish to live for any length of time.   Pump kits are really quite handy, as you get what you need to set up a basic pump system without the fear of buying the wrong fittings and accessories.
