One of the most exciting things about having a child aside from giving it a name is the process when you take time decorating childrens rooms. It is something that can be done extravagantly, but often times, as with many things related to children, it is the simple things that work best. Three of the most important things to keep in mind are the age of the child, how long you want the room to last, and the theme you choose for the room.
How old your child is often will determine how much you are willing to spend on the room and how much work you are willing to do to it. A baby of course is an age group that you will be more than likely to give considerable thought to in terms of their room. You have specific items that you have to make room for in the children's room, such as a crib, perhaps a changing table, and maybe a chair, rocker or glider. Many nurseries are small rooms, as babies don't need much space to move around in their early stages.
A toddler or a young child, though, might want to have a more creative environment, and you might want to make the room multi-purpose and a room that can stand the test of time. Color scheme becomes more important as you think forward towards those grade school years, and versatility also becomes the watch word. The best thing is to be able to change the room with ease during these early growth years.
A teenager or young adult is more likely to want to be an active participant in their room design choice. Make sure you let them know boundaries, like no changing light fixtures, if that is your decision, or drilling holes in the wa
ll, but engage them in the decision making processes, and you will find not only a happier teenager, but also a more harmonious existence for you and the rest of your family.
Like many toys today, a child's room will be used through many stages in the child's life, and so it is for this reason that making sure a room can stand the transitions from one stage to another is of significant importance. A baby who is not walking may find a bright border at the bottom of the wall much more interesting than a toddler who is always looking up, and so you will want to be sure that you allot for those changing phases.
Also relevant is how long you want the room to last; namely when do you want to remodel the room again? Does the furniture in the room mean you have to redecorate the children's room once more before they turn six years old, or will it last through their teenage years? Decide with caution, since your ambitious nature will likely diminish after experiencing the upheaval of a major change in the children's room!
Themes are a major topic in and of themselves these days, not just when referring to decorating children's rooms, but in all aspects of a child's life. Make sure the theme you choose is not focused on a specific character they enjoy, for their tastes will change over the years, and you will not want to have to keep coming up with more creative themes. Try to find one that will transition well, such as a circus theme, as its bright colors can be used for another theme choice later on.
Keeping these tips in mind will ensure success for you and your child's room.
